WALTER SIMONSON: KIRBY´S SON (1)

A esta altura del partido casi todo comiquero de ley sabe que el espíritu de Jack “The King” Kirby vela sobre todos aquellos que aman esa forma de arte  tan particular llamada comic… o si lo prefieren historieta. Su impronta creativa ha dejado profundas marcas con cada uno de los trabajos que fueron llevados a cabo a lo largo de su vida profesional.

Personajes como Capitán América, Los Cuatro Fantásticos, Thor, El Increíble Hulk, Darkseid y Los Nuevos Dioses, Kamandi, Demon y los X-Men son tan solo unos pocos nombres que vieron la luz gracias a sus buenas artes. Quizá Stan “The Man” Lee haya ideado los conceptos básicos de alguno de ellos, pero fue el gran Jack quien les dio sustancia y los transformó en auténticos iconos heroicos que aún perduran en nuestra actualidad.

Muchos son los dibujantes que hablan de Kirby como una gran fuente de inspiración al momento de decidir transformarse en creadores de esos universos fantásticos que supieron admirar en su niñez y juventud. Pero hubo uno solo al que realmente puedo decir con total seguridad que es un hijo directo de su increíble herencia.

Su nombre: Walter Simonson.

Nacido en Knoxville (Tennessee-EE.UU.) el 2 de septiembre de 1946, ya desde muy joven se había convertido un gran fan de las historietas, sobre todo con los trabajos realizados por Carl Barks y Alex Thot. Ello lo llevó a tratar de desarrollar desde muy temprano sus dotes artísticas.

Mientras estudiaba geología en la Amherst College (con el fin de transformarse en un especialista en dinosaurios), descubrió el fantástico universo Marvel de la mano del Thor de Kirby y Lee, una influencia que encendería de manera definitiva su pasión por el dibujo. Ello lo llevó a inscribirse en la Rhode Island School of Design, del cual se graduó en 1972, siendo su tesis de trabajo nada menos que The Star Slammers.

Con su carpeta a cuestas, Simonson se dirigió a las oficinas de DC Comics. Allí se reunió con Archie Goodwin, quien a su vez lo puso en contacto con Howard Chaykin, Michael Kaluta, Bermie Wrightson y Alan Weiss para que evaluaran sus trabajos. El más interesado de ellos fue Kaluta, quien mostró los dibujos a Carmine Infantino, el cual lo contrató de manera casi inmediata.

El primer trabajo profesional fue una historia (con guiones de Len Wein) que hizo su aparición en la revista Weird War Tales # 10 (1/1973), pero la historieta que lo encumbraría sería la del un personaje “kyrbeano” conocido como Manhunter, que sería publicada como una historia de apoyo de la revista Detective Comics. Con el éxito consolidado, las puertas de DC le fueron abiertas para dibujar Metal Men, Hercules Unbound y Batman (en donde co-crearía junto a Steve Englehart el villano conocido como Dr. Phosphorus).

Por fuera de DC, es de destacar su adaptación gráfica del film Alien, el Octavo Pasajero, que contó con los guiones de Archie Goodwin y fue publicada por la editorial Metal Hurlant.

Si bien su trabajo para Marvel Comics dio inicio en 1977 con The Rampaging Hulk, Thor y Battlestar Galactica, su gran producción daría inicio recién en 1982 con un crossover de gran calidad como lo fue Marvel and DC Present Featuring The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans, junto al prolífico guionista Chris Claremont. En el mismo, los dos equipos de héroes más famosos de esos tiempos se enfrentaban al poder combinado de Darkseid y Fenix Oscura.

Al año siguiente tendría su gran oportunidad cuando se encargó de los guiones y los dibujos de The Mighty Thor, abocándose a una serie de épicos relatos en donde el espíritu de Kirby volvió a enseñorearse de una serie que se hallaba algo inmersa en la rutina. Los espectaculares dibujos realizados por Simonson para esta serie, caracterizado por la simpleza de sus trazos, las increíbles perspectivas forzadas y la gran complejidad en lo que se refería a los detalles, impactaron profundamente en el gusto de los fans quienes vieron en este dibujante un espectacular renacimiento del universo del dios del trueno. 

Su andadura en la serie se extendería hasta mayo de 1986 (dibujo y guiones) y hasta agosto de 1987 únicamente como guionista. Posteriormente, y junto a su esposa Louise, se encargaron de la realización de la serie X-Factor, una suerte de regreso a las raíces del universo mutante original.

En el nuevo siglo que se nos vino encima, volvió a trabajar para DC Comics en donde tuvo la oportunidad de embarcarse en otra de las grandes creaciones de Jack Kirby conocida como El 4° Mundo, con la serie regular llamada Orion

Otras publicaciones en las cuales desarrolló sus dotes de dibujante y guionista fueron Wonder Woman, Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer, Hawkgirl, Bat Lash, El Vigilante, World of Warcraft y Wednesday Comics (Demon y Catwoman).

En 2012, Simonson volvería a Thor pero no al personaje creado por  la Marvel, cuando publicó para la editorial IDW Publishing  la serie llamada Ragnarök, en donde nos es mostrada su muy particular visión de los dioses asgardianos.

A lo largo de su vida artística, Simonson ha recibido gran cantidad de premios, entre los que podemos nombrar el Shazam Awards, Harvey Awards y Eisner Awards.

A pesar de enorme influencia recibida de artistas como Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko y Gil Kane, Walt Simonson ha sabido transformarse en un muy particular dibujante que supo descollar entre sus pares gracias a sus atrevidos diseños y a su inmensa creatividad a la hora de mostrarnos un universo superheroico en donde todo es posible.

¿Un hijo de Kirby? seguro… pero no cabe duda que es un hijo pródigo que ha sabido dejar su marca en el medio comiquero.

The author, Walter Simonson, takes the reader through Kirby's early years and his time working for DC Comics. The book includes many of the important events that led to the creation of the Marvel Universe.
